Kamal Hasan (Indian Film Actor)

HIGHLY VERSATILE INDIA FILM ACTOR

Kamal Hasan was born on November 7, 1954, in Paramakkudi, Tamil Nadu, India. is a highly
acclaimed and highly versatile Indian film actor whose work is primarily in the Tamil film
industry. Kamal Hasan is also a critically acclaimed actor and a box office success. His recent
films from the year 2000 to 2006 such as Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu , Vasool Raja MBBS and Thenali have been commercial box office successes both in India and Internationally.

Kamal was born to Srinivasan and as their fourth and youngest child. His father an advocate gave all three of his sons (CharuHassan, ChandraHasan, KamalHasan) the suffix of "Haasan" as a sign of his friendship to one Mr. Haasan. He is also a trained playback singer and sometimes pens the lyrics for the soundtracks of some of his recent films. He is an able performer of the
Bharatanatyam dance form. He had assisted in choreography early in his career.

Experimentation, that is what makes him stand out. He is the only actor who has always tread
where no one else would dare to. This versatile actor Kamal Haasan, who is today considered to be one of the top-most actors in Indian cinema, began his career in Hindi films with 'Ek Duje Ke
Liye' opposite another newcomer Rati Agnihotri. The film ran to packed Film Songs houses and
another star was born.

Acting offers kept pouring in. Unfortunately for this South Indian star, despite notable
performances Upcoming Movies in films like 'Sadma', 'Giraftar', 'Sanam Teri Kasam' and 'Saagar',
Kamal failed to capture the masses attention.

He retreated gracefully to the South. Mani Rathnam's film 'Nayakan' was perhaps the first
commercial film in India, which didn't compromise on aesthetics. And with 'Nayakan' and 'Apoorva
Sahodarargal' (Appu Raja) being dubbed in Hindi, the champion of histrionics resurfaced in
Bombay.

His 'Kuruthi Poonal', though a remake of a Hindi film, made news. 'Hindustani', which first
stormed the South sent the currents to Bollywood even before its release in the north. His latest
venture `Hey Ram`, a film he has done on Mahatma Gandhi, has drawn a lot of attention and
acclaim. According to him, the secret behind his success, besides talent, is his voice
modulation, an art seldom perfected by the Tamil stars. "In 'Rasleela', I spoke in a squeaky
voice while in 'Apoorva Sahodarargal', I spoke in a harsh, biting voice. Whereas in 'Manmatha
Leela', I experimented with an altogether different tone." Instead of going in a for formal
training in acting, Kamal Haasan believed in getting a thorough practical knowledge and for more
than five years, he worked as an assistant to K Balachander. "During the course of my
apprenticeship with him, I learnt a bit of direction and also a bit of editing. I also learnt
dancing from dance master Tangappan. That helped me a lot." Despite the fact that 'Ek Duje Ke
Liye' had turned out to be a super-duper hit, Kamal and Rati did not see eye to eye and he even
turned down several offers co-starring her. "I cannot forget the fact that she had insulted my
director, K Balchander, the man who had brought her to the Hindi screen. Rati has forgotten the
fact that Mr Balchander was around in the industry at a time when she was still wetting her
nappies. The truth is that Rati does not like Tamilians and has forgotten the encouragement which  the Tamil industry had given her. Without that, she would not have been able to reach anywhere.

However, these things refuse to deter him. With a few Hindi films like 'Chachi 420', and of
course 'Hey Ram' Kamal Haasan continues to enthrall the audience with his varied performances.

Kamal Haasan married Vani Ganapathy in 1978. He legally divorced Vani in 1985. He then married
Sarika but their marriage has ended in divorce too. He has two daughters with Sarika,(Shruthi and Akshara). He is currently living with Actress Gouthami of Kurudi Punal fame.

In his upcoming film Dasavatharam, he is playing 10 different roles, an act which is the second
of its kind in the world, after the Tamil movie Dambachari (1936).

Kamal will be conferred with a very unique honour in this year 2007 as "Living Legend" in the
film business by FICCI,India.
